Primitive Snowshoe Biathlon

Chairman Fred Hanss, snowshoebiathlon@fort1749.org

This unique winter sport requires participants to walk or run along a trail through the woods on wooden snowshoes. Targets are set-up along the trail and runners are required to fire 2 shots at each target. At the end of the course runners throw a tomahawk. A person’s run is timed and five minutes are deducted from the runner’s time each time he or she hits a target. The event takes place at the St. Lawrence Sportsman’s Club in Lisbon.

The 2025 Event will be held March 1, 2

The Fort La Presentation Association will hold its annual St. Lawrence Valley Primitive Snowshoe Biathlon on the weekend of March 1 and 2 at the St. Lawrence Valley Sportsman’s Club located at 58 Sportsmans Club Rd., Ogdensburg. The event will kick-off at 10 a.m. and conclude at 2 p.m. both days. Sponsors are most welcome. Our sponsors for this year’s event were Atlantic Testing Laboratories, Gray’s Gun Shop, T.J. Fiacco Construction and LaBella Associates.
Event Chairman Fred Hanss said participants run or walk a 1.5 mile-long trail through the woods, stopping at each of 5 targets to fire 2 shots at gong-style targets. At the end of the course, participants can toss a tomahawk. The event features several classes for elders, men, woman and youth who may use smooth bore or rifled muzzleloaders. In 2023, the event drew runners from across New York State, Vermont, Pennsylvania, and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec.
Medals are awarded to the top three participants in each class and the registration fee is $20. Once registered, runners can run the course a second or third time for an additional $5 fee. The registration form is available at wordpress.com/post/fort1749.org/3329. 2024 Biathlon: John Miller III, of DeKalb Junction, watches as Ray Haines, PA, throws a tomahawk during Fort La Presentation Association’s 10th annual Primitive Snowshoe Biathlon held at the St. Lawrence Sportsman Club, Lisbon, March 3. About 25 participants from around St. Lawrence County and beyond, including out of state and Canada, raced a mile and a half through woods, firing two shots at each of five stations, then throwing a tomahawk at the end of the course. Traditional flintlock, percussion or modern in-line firearms were used. This year, however, contestants did not race on snowshoes due to lack of snow.
